The town of Grantville, Georgia in Coweta County began as Calico Corner in 1840. The Atlanta and LaGrange Railroad came to town in 1852 and Calico Corner was changed to Grantville in honor of the railroad's chief engineer, L.P. Grantville. Many beautiful and noteworthy homes were built in the late 1800's, and Grantville was one of the largest historic districts in the National Register of Historic Places. Bonnie Castle, an elaborate brick home that was later converted into a bed and breakfast is a wonderful example of the wide variety of architectural styles dating back to 1896.
J.W. Colley built Bonnie Castle in 1896. Colley's talented wife Itrua, affectionately known as "Miss Love," designed the edifice. Constructed of local bricks, granite from Stone Mountain, and heart pine, the twenty room mansion represents Victorian at its finest. A grand staircase featuring exceptional stained glass greets guests in the main hallway of this two-story, 20-room mansion. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Heritage Highway. Hardwood floors and oak paneling warm the rooms, while gilded ceilings and stained glass recall the romance of the Victorian era. Although breakfast is served with silver, china and crystal, families with young children are welcomed.
Frequent guests at Bonnie Castle circa 1896 included President Franklin D. Roosevelt and President Jimmy Carter. At the turn of the century, the castle was home to Loveleigh Novelties, patented dolls that enjoyed an international market. The walnut head character dolls were unsual for their time as they showed a dignified portrait of African-American people, not the caricatures normally seen. The Palmers have created Loveleigh Novelties 1997 to reproduce the dolls which may be purchased at Reuse the Past, their Victorian antiques shop, located a few blocks walking distance from Bonnie Castle.
